The mold can be designed in either male or female configuration, and the surface is treated with a release agent to aid in removing the final product. A liquid gel coat of polyester, polyurethane, or other resin is applied to the mold surface, which will become the exterior surface of the final part. Reinforcement layers and resin are added to achieve the desired thickness of the laminate. Lay-up is ideal for creating large structures that require high strength. Fiberglass spray-up is a mechanized version of lay-up, where a spray gun simultaneously applies resin and chops continuous glass strands into specific lengths. The chopped fibers combine with the resin spray to create a polymer composition that typically supports a gel coat. The fiber-resin mixture is rolled out to ensure proper wetting of the fibers and eliminate voids and bubbles before the resin cures.
