He had previously served as an engineering manager for a damper company for fourteen years before founding Kelair. Following Mr. Kelly's passing in 2001, the company has been family-operated by his wife Sandi Kelly and son Shaun Kelly, both of whom bring extensive industry experience and have been with the company since its inception. Since its establishment in 1987, Kelair has specialized in custom-designed and fabricated industrial dampers. In 2016, Kelair was acquired by Matot, Inc., a fourth-generation, women-owned business with a manufacturing history dating back to 1888. Kelair relocated to Bellwood, IL in April 2017.
