Line Manufacturing was founded in 1932 by Ralph and Clyde Garthwait in a two-car garage with $400 each in investment. Initially focusing on producing broom caps, the founders worked long hours, often 15- to 16-hour days, including weekends. By 1939, with annual shipments reaching $275,000 and only one full-time employee, the company moved to a nearby 1,000-square-foot space. Following Ralph's passing in the same year, Clyde sold his share to Ralph's widow, Helen, who took on the responsibility of running the business when Ralph's sons, John and Joseph, were called to serve in World War II. The history of the Garthwait enterprise reflects perseverance, hard work, and a commitment to customer service, leading to consistent growth and challenging negative perceptions of the capabilities of American industry. Today, Line Manufacturing is led by third-generation members Bruce Garthwait, Joseph Garthwait, Jr., and Gregory Garthwait, operating out of a 20,000-square-foot facility in Wolcott, Connecticut.
